Program Overview

The treatment of breast cancer is as complex as the disease itself, and requires a multidisciplinary team of experts to determine the best recommendation for a patient's plan of care.

At UF Health Jacksonville, the breast cancer team works together to improve the overall survival and quality of life for each patient. Determining treatment options begins with an accurate diagnosis from the team of pathologists and radiologists. Breast cancer is then often treated with multiple modalities, including surgery, radiation therapy, and systemic therapy and includes the experts in plastic surgery and genetic counseling.

But which is the best treatment option for each patient? What treatments are recommended in the most complex breast cancer cases?

Join us as our panel of experts come together to discuss some of the most complex breast cancer cases they have seen and how they used the latest research to determine the recommended course of treatment for each patient.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the decision-making process for the treatment planning of complex breast cancer cases with input from specialists in medical oncology, surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, genetics and pathology.
  2. Discuss the latest research that is applicable to the presented complex breast cancer cases.
  3. Discuss technical advances in local therapy for breast cancer.

About the CME Presenting Sponsor: UF Health Proton Therapy Institute

This program was developed and led by the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute. UF Health Proton Therapy Institute physicians work closely with the UF Health Breast Center - Jacksonville, including each patient's surgeon and medical oncologist, to create a comprehensive treatment plan. Typically, proton therapy begins four to six weeks following surgery or chemotherapy, and is given over a period lasting six weeks. Proton therapy is a type of radiation that can be stopped at a prescribed depth in tissue, whereas conventional radiation continues beyond the tumor. Breast cancer patients may benefit from proton therapy radiation, which can decrease radiation to the heart and lungs.
